Position: In-person Volunteer Tutor 

Date: September 2022- June 2023 

Location(s): Keele (1652 Keele St.) AND Oakwood (504 Oakwood Ave.)

For Youth Initiative (FYI) is a non-profit organization that has served, inspired and advocated for thousands of teens and young adults in York South-Weston since 1995. Our multi-service agency provides year-round programs and services to local youth to meet their needs and empower them to reach their full potential.  

Position Summary: 

This position is responsible for providing academic tutoring support to grade 8 through high school-aged youth, including those in their 1st year post-secondary education. This will take place at our Keele or Oakwood site. Our tutoring program operates Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 4:00-7:00 pm. Sessions are divided into three (3) 1 hour long sessions. Tutors will be working on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, with a minimum commitment of 3 months. Some flexibility can be provided if needed. 

Main Tasks/ Responsibilities: 

  • Tutoring students in a variety of school subjects to support the improvement of their academic performance ` 

  • Encouraging students to develop self-confidence in performing academic work (i.e. gain the skills needed to be confident enough to attain positive and self-sustaining study habits) 

  • Providing mentorship to youth that is useful and positive (such as resource sharing, academic guidance, etc.)  

  • Creating and maintaining a fun learning environment to enhance student engagement in the tutoring program  

  • Tracking student attendance and performance as they participate in the tutoring program; submitting evaluation to Program and Volunteer Coordinator as requested  

  • Maintaining appropriate and positive relations with students involved in the tutoring program 

Position Requirements: 

  • Some postsecondary education preferred; however, grade 12 high school-aged students looking to get involved with FYI are also encouraged to apply as peer tutors 

  • Strong Math, English, and Science skills 

  • Able to work with high school-aged youth from diverse backgrounds and cultures, in both 1:1 and group settings.  

  • Overall knowledge and understanding of high school curriculum across several subjects; able to find and utilize suitable tutoring tools and materials  

  • Professionally engages with FYI staff and community partners; able to exercise good judgement at all times  

  • Able to work with minimal supervision and submit accurate evaluation reports to Program and Volunteer Coordinator  

  • Vulnerable Sector Screening required.
