Introducing Our
Program Advisory Committee (PAC)
Purpose
The purpose of the Program Advisory Committee (PAC) is to provide both FYI staff and the youth participants with an equal opportunity to gain expertise, share information and ideas and evaluate and plan accordingly for all aspects of program development, delivery and evaluation.
Background
In 2009, the initial idea for the PAC was to provide 2 youth from each of FYI’s respective sites with an opportunity to meet once monthly to discuss their views and opinions on our programming. This committee was to be organized by a management person from each site but led entirely by youth. The objectives were simple:
- Develop a staff training rubric
- Evaluate the effectiveness and content of FYI programs
The staff training rubric was to be developed based on information provided by PAC members (youth). They were to identify the capacity gaps and determine what areas they felt FYI frontline workers needed development in. Once the needs for staff capacity building were identified a list was to be compiled and carried out to ensure that staff received the trainings as identified by the youth, (e.g. CPR, addictions, sexual health, Wraparound, etc.).
The program development and evaluation component to the PAC objectives was to define what FYI’s existing programs had to offer and to determine what needed to be improved. In addition the PAC was to work to design an evaluation tool to measure the success of the programs and the impact on participants. The youth were to shadow all programs and compile notes on their observations and return to the committee with their findings and feedback to aide the development of future programs throughout all junctures of planning.
The PAC concept was largely influenced by FYI’s 2009-2012 Strategic Vision, which contains a component about Capacity Building with heavy consideration pertaining to FYI’s programming.
