FYI Scholarship Program

In 2006, FYI developed a Scholarship Program in commemoration of Jamal Hemmings and Amon Beckles, two Toronto youth who were both tragically lost to gun violence in November 2005. Jamal and Amon were participants in FYI’s daily programs and will be remembered for their positive, vibrant personalities and dance skills. FYI honours their memory through the FYI Scholarship Program.

The FYI Scholarship Program serves as a momentous way for the community to recognize and show commitment towards young people.  FYI believes that it is crucial to invest in young people to generate youth leadership and healthy communities. $27,000 has been awarded by FYI’s volunteer-driven scholarship committee to date. 17 scholarships of various amounts have been provided to youth between 2007 and 2011. Two to three scholarships are provided each year up to $2,000 each.

Applicants are invited to submit a written application and creative component (i.e. filmed submissions on DVD where the applicant describes why the scholarship is important to them, a spoken word performance on DVD or CD, artwork, poetry etc.).

A community-based committee will review all applications to select the final recipients.  The criteria for the awards are not solely based on academic achievements.  The scholarships will be distributed to young people who demonstrate leadership skills and community-based volunteerism, as well as need.

Exciting News!

Mayor, David Miller is a great supporter of For Youth Initiative and its Annual Scholarship Program. Throughout his time as Mayor, Mr. Miller envisioned Toronto as a city where youth are involved meaningfully in community initiatives and where young people are granted access to opportunities to better their lives. He also strived to ensure that Toronto is a place where organizations such as FYI are supported through funding, so that we can continue the critical work that we do in the Weston-Mount Dennis community.

Mr. Miller personally believes in our work and has decided to generously support FYI’s Annual Scholarship Program. I am pleased to announce that Mayor David Miller has designated an annual contribution of $2000 to FYI’s Annual Scholarship Progra m in memory of his mother, Joan Miller. We are incredibly grateful and excited about this donation, as it will provide even more young people in our community the opportunity to have access to the vital post-secondary education that they deserve.
